THE READING ROOM: 2014 & 2013 Reading Quests

This page is now a combination of my Reading quests, that were on Squidoo, minus the reviews as Hub pages does not allow more than 2 amazon widgets a page. SO all the fun stuff is here and you can find the reviews on the links at right in the Book Nook. On that site is the 2015 reading quest as well. (At least I can do proper reviews etc there!)

The Black Hole known as my Book case

Why is it a black hole? because as I finish books, I still have a bag and box to read through with all the book series' in them. So it feels like I never get any out of the way. One bag alone consists of the Black Dagger Brotherhood! Another reason it's the balck hole, is because I tend to stuff newspaper or magazine clippings alongside any book they may go with I forget what kind of library they call that, and no not reference.

Honestly I have 2 bags, one in which is full of the black Dagger Brotherhood series and more and another bag that is over flowing with other assorted books. Then there's what's stacked on the 'to read' shelf. I also have some books in a box in the dining room. So you can 'see' why I started doing reading quests each year! Once I finish them I put them in the pile to sell at the tag sale.

So last year my Book series quest 2013 Year of the Book series (as far as I'm concerned) was a hit...as far as reading more books than I have in the past a record 38 (which includes the 3 I've read only a few page to half the book the 'half books would equal one so in actuality it would be about 36 1/2 books i read.) Another good thing I was a to make room getting rid of some books.

Sadly come mid November, I puttered out. I still was reading but not at the rate I'd have liked (plus life also gets in the way so there's that) but with having a little more than half a book left as well as one more in that series to read... I figured I could relax a bit & go slow.

I have at least 2 series planned for 2014 and some pretty fat books as well. I'm just not sure what I'm going to start with first as a book from my favorite series is coming out the end of January so it will probably be light reading until it comes out.

Aside from this ONE rule for every 5 books read, I get a new one.... then there are no rules (at this time) .

I will keep track of how long it takes me to read a book as I always do as well as other notes but I'm not going to stress this year on trying to read them in a certain amount of time and having to rush (especially when I read the Black dagger Brotherhood!)

If there is nothing next to the book then I have yet to read it, being I include my own reviews. both in the section as well as next to the book I include certain information (when I started the book, fave quotes etc in the section & the tual reew will be found next tot he book.)

I don't think I will have a mission statement, 'banked' days and so forth for this (year)one, like I did for 2013-Year of the Book series (you'll have to search for it on here). (Once I figure it out I will be posting This page as well as the 2013 Reading quest on one of my blogs (as I plan to start another at the turn of the new year which will be started on the blog. none of these other sites screwing up my work!)

But anything that comes up will be posted here (I may just note how many days it took to read)

My Quest for book space.

I don't normally make New Year's Resolutions; but this year with my to-read shelf overflowing, having a box of books, plus a big reusable shopping bag over flowing with books, I decided The idea is finish in 7 days or less

#1--my reading would consist of reading only book series (or books I have from a series).

So I decided to make it somewhat of a resolution.

#2-- he 2nd part of this I'm not sure I can keep (up), is to try to read a book a week to no more than 2 weeks.

(however, this of course depends on the length of the book, for a basis books with multiple stories will be at least one week per story to finsh.) If I finish a book ahead of schedule (for instance: if I read a book in less than 7 days, the number of days I finsihed ahead of time is a 'Banked' day or extra day.) I will most likely note an estimated deadline for when I want to finish a book I think might take longer than a week.

The ONLY way I can read a book that's not in a series is

A -- If I finish individual books (or full series) ahead of schedule (Ie: The Broken Heart Oklahoma books should not take me longer than a week each to read. (I read the first 4 books between January 1st - 16. At the time I was on the 4th & 7 or 8 days ahead of schedule on the series itself (let alone the quest).

B-- Redeeming those 'banked' days I'm ahead.

C--If I am between finishing 1 series and going to another. If I know a book is part of a series, then I may just read the one lone book I have to whatever series it is apart of. *Note if it IS part of a series, I do NOT have to deduct the 'banked' days for reading it (its ONLY if it's a NON series book I have to deduct the days)

D-- I have a book a friend lent me they thought I'd like as well as one I want to read to give to them so they can take their time in reading it. So these 2 books (at least one of them) I will read in the time I made up.

#3-- 3rd part which I've tried to stick to & I have some what sort of been good (unless I could get them for free or super cheap at Thrift stores) is for every 5 books I read, then I may buy a new one (unless of course its a book in one of the series I regularly (or try to) read. Like The Otherworld Series by Yasmine Galenorn.

sci-fi & I think it's a YA (maybe younger) story. It's a thin book & to me all that mattered was that it was a slim book good for a day or 2 away or a day at the beach. I just want to start getting a few of the books I don't plan to keep outta here!

The Rules

1.-You need the first 5-10 Chapters (or 50 pages) to know if you can stick with a book.

(sadly though what do you do when that 10 chapters ends up being the middle of the book, esp. with what to you is the worst to read?) I ended up starting another book & just read the bad book until I couldn't stand it anymore, & would switch to the other.

2. NEVER Quit on a book

I really HATE to not finish a book no matter how much I dislike it (see Reading rule #1) but sometimes like the afformentioned it is torture to read and therefore the reason I started Rule #1.

(its just the fighting with myself I have to work out before I actually do)

3. Vere away from your Norm! You will never know when you wil find a treasure!

No matter what your fave genre, always through something different in there. Do you normally read romance? Throw in a crime thriller, or horror. Normally read vampire stuff, throw in some werewolves. I found a few favorites this way! a Couple of Crime/mysteries

book My mother & a friend do not usually read vampire books, but there was one I reacently read I LOVED see broken heart series) they read the first book!)

As you may have already read above, I want to make sure I read (depending on the size of the book) at least 1 a week; for instance paperbacks up to 300 pages should take no longer than a week, as in 7 days (or less); past that may take up to 2 weeks.

Which for example means the Broken Heart series I estimated should have taken me no longer than the first or 2nd week of February to finish. Well I was right in that estimation, finished the 7 books of the series I had on the 4th of february)

Flash Fiction: 72 Very Short Stories Anthology

I took some notes from the introduction "Flash Fiction" is around 750 words but no less than 250 words. This was the limit Jerome Stein set for his "worlds shortest short story" competition (which noteably the winners appear each fall in Sunday:Southeast review"

James Thomas also explains in his introduction how "Flash Fiction' opposed to "Sudden Fiction" (which is what was done in previous books ) is differfent. "we wanted to make a distinction between the two story types" Flash Fiction is shorter in terms of a limit whereas the sudden fiction is 1,000 words longer (or up to 2,000 words)

Hunting Ground by Patricia Briggs

Oops looks like I forgot to post notes but then again I wasn't all that keen on the book anyway!

On Entertainment weekly Front Row they asked what book would we want to see made into a movie. Well I notice a lot of YA books being fashioned for the big screen. How about something that is for at least 18 up?

My #1 choice (tie) would be Yasmine Galenorn's Otherworld series which has EVERYTHING in it. Fantasy, mysery and more. Dragons, Fae, Witches, weres, and some vampires & a whole variety of other things mixed in. AS for actors in it.. am really not sure. If you read my Yasmine Galenorn's oTherworld lens you will see I did an interview with her. Sadly I didn't get any actual names out of her for actors. As for my own... I really can't decide but she has art of the character Morio & There's an actor he reminds me of I just don't know the name.

& I've only read 2 books of J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood

but will be reading the series maybe after I finish reading my next book. (so in a week or 2) Basically they are vampires but if I remember right they do some sort of protection. I forget it's been so long. But There would be an ensamble cast The link will take you to a page I made up with suggestions of what actors to use from fans as well as my own.

Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum Novels I think Reese Witherspoon would be cool in this (at least for one idea but I think tephanie has brown hair) I love Angelina Jolie & would love to see her in something like this but I'm not sure how she would do. as for the guys.. mmm I would love to see ROb Kazinsky as Morelli for Ranger I have no idea. He has latin originas and I can't think of any in ther late 20s to mid 30s as for who to play Lula.. I think it would have to be a comedian. Wanda Sykes comes to mind but Lula is to put it nicely overweight & wears clothes about 2-3 sizes too small.

it is also a good idea to include a

Timeline (best used for Biographies, Historyreports & mystery/crime novels )

You can make a 'BOX' line or a 'string' line timeline. (Here are a couple of examples of what I mean)

I think that last one makes it all the different types I can think of in ways to do it. So pick one you like the way it looks best (or maybe you can make a hybrid of 2 or 3.) Good luck
